Storm Preparedness

Dear Neighbor,

This past Saturday, the National Weather Service issued a wind advisory, severe thunderstorm warning, and a tornado watch for our area.  It has been confirmed that 4 tornadoes touched down in Howell, Sea Girt, Jackson Township and Cinnaminson leaving behind thousands without power, downed trees and power lines and significant damage. Here in Marlboro, less than 100 Marlboro residences experienced power disruptions and they were restored within hours.  We were fortunate to escape the worst of the storm.

However, this is the second time in a month that our area has been under a tornado watch with tornados confirmed in our region. I want to again remind residents to prepare and be ready for emergencies.  These storms can come quickly and preparation in advance is key.

  • Know the Difference between WATCH and WARNING
    • Watch means that a tornado is possible as weather conditions are favorable. Be prepared and keep a close watch on weather apps. Review your emergency plans with family and be ready to act quickly.
    • Warning means a tornado has been sighted or indicated and there is imminent danger. Move to an interior room on the lowest floor and protect yourself from flying debris.
  • Make an EMERGENCY KIT keep it in a safe location and ensure all family members know where it is.
  • The Township Recycling Calendar plan ahead has a focus on snow storms, but it does include important numbers and websites to know in times of emergency. Please save PAGE 22 and PAGE 23, linked here, to your phone to have available in times of emergency. Consider saving the emergency phone numbers to your contact list in your cell phone and bookmark the websites.
  • Follow pertinent social media pages such as Marlboro FB and IG @marlborotownship , @NWSMountHolly, @ReadyNewJersey @JCPandL
  • Ensure that smart phone weather apps have notifications turned on and are linked to your location. Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) are short authorized messages broadcast from cell towers to any WEA-enabled mobile device in a targeted area (weather and missing children alerts, for example). If you are not receiving these alerts, visit HERE to troubleshoot.

Marlboro’s Office of Emergency Management is always prepared and at the ready, however, we cannot do it alone.  I understand that this is not a scenario we want to have to deal with, but please take time to plan and prepare. Together, we will weather the storm.

Yours in community,
Mayor Jon Hornik
